Not Good to Be Alone

(Genesis 2:15-25)

Yearly Theme:  “Patience is…”

Series Title:  “Love and Marriage”

Something to think about:

We come to the second chapter of Genesis today in our series entitled, “Love and Marriage.”  And we will be exploring the creation of the first woman in detail today.  We will explore the sequence of events that led GOD to create not just one, but two distinctly different humans from the same substance.  We will learn why it wasn’t good for man to be alone, and why it’s still not good today.  We will observe the equality that was inherent in the human bonds of marriage before the fall in Genesis 3, and the importance of the lifelong commitment in the marriage covenant.

Let’s take a look:

Genesis 2:15-25 (NLT),

15 The Lord God placed the man in the Garden of Eden to tend and watch over it. 16 But the Lord God warned him, “You may freely eat the fruit of every tree in the garden—17 except the tree of the knowledge of good and evil. If you eat its fruit, you are sure to die.”

18 Then the Lord God said, “It is not good for the man to be alone. I will make a helper who is just right for him.” 19 So the Lord God formed from the ground all the wild animals and all the birds of the sky. He brought them to the man to see what he would call them, and the man chose a name for each one. 20 He gave names to all the livestock, all the birds of the sky, and all the wild animals. But still there was no helper just right for him.

21 So the Lord God caused the man to fall into a deep sleep. While the man slept, the Lord God took out one of the man’s ribs and closed up the opening. 22 Then the Lord God made a woman from the rib, and he brought her to the man.

23 “At last!” the man exclaimed.

“This one is bone from my bone,

and flesh from my flesh!

She will be called ‘woman,’

because she was taken from ‘man.’ ”

24 This explains why a man leaves his father and mother and is joined to his wife, and the two are united into one.

25 Now the man and his wife were both naked, but they felt no shame.

Here’s the takeaway this morning:

Key Point:  “GOD made male and female as the perfect complementary pair to fill and rule His creation as one flesh.

What is the sequence of events that lead to the creation of the first woman?  Let’s break this down further today…

  • It’s not good for  (singular) to be  .

Genesis 2:18a (NLT),  Then the LORD God said, “It is not good for the man to be alone.”

  • Creation of a  who is just  for him.

Genesis 2:18b (NLT),  “I will make a helper who is just right for him.”

  •  of his  , and  of his  .

Genesis 2:23 (NLT),  “At last!” the man exclaimed.  “This one is bone from my bone, and flesh from my flesh!  She will be called ‘woman,’ because she was taken from ‘man.’”

  •  and  .

Genesis 2:24 (NLT),  This explains why a man leaves his father and mother and is joined to his wife, and the two are untied into one.

Something to take home:

  1. T. Wright in his book entitled, Surprised by Hope, writes,

It’s not good for any of us to be alone.  We were created by GOD for community, not isolation.

Do you feel isolated and alone?  Those of you who are single, there is hope and there is community for you.  Those of you who are married and feel the chasm of loneliness between you and your spouse, there is hope for restoration.  Those of you who have lost a loved one through death, all is not lost, there is still community and fellowship for you.

Don’t let the enemy, Satan, convince you that you’re alone.  Embrace Christ, and embrace the body of Christ, the Church.

Key Point:  “GOD made male and female as the perfect complementary pair to fill and rule His creation as one flesh.
