Something to think about:

When I think about GOD’s protection, in all reality, this seems like a fitting illustration.  In this wild, and untamed world in which we live, GOD’s protection doesn’t always look the way we expect it to, but He does come through for us.

A couple weeks ago, we started a new year, and began a new theme on the fruit of the Spirit:  Patience.  And today, as we consider this theme, we will be taking a look at Adam and Eve in the Old Testament; Genesis 3.  In this chapter Adam and Eve disobey the one command GOD had given them.  Also, in this chapter, what we see is GOD’s punishment, but also GOD’s protection over them in spite of their disobedience.  With this in mind, GOD’s patience toward the first humans is truly divine.  Let’s take a closer look…

Turn in your Bibles to:  Genesis 3:1-24

Here’s the takeaway:

Key Point:  “GOD’s protection shows His patience toward us even when we’re in the wrong.”

How does GOD’s protection show His patience toward Adam and Eve in this passage?  Let’s take a look…

  •  was not  .

Genesis 2:15-17 (NLT), 15  The LORD God placed the man in the Garden of Eden to tend and watch over it. 16  But the LORD God warned him, “You may freely eat the fruit of every tree in the garden— 17  except the tree of the knowledge of good and evil. If you eat its fruit, you are sure to die.”

Genesis 5:4-5 (NLT), 4  After the birth of Seth, Adam lived another 800 years, and he had other sons and daughters. 5  Adam lived 930 years, and then he died.

  • GOD  them for the

Genesis 3:20-21 (NLT), 20  Then the man—Adam—named his wife Eve, because she would be the mother of all who live. 21  And the LORD God made clothing from animal skins for Adam and his wife.

  • There was no  to the  .

Genesis 3:22-24 (NLT), 22  Then the LORD God said, “Look, the human beings have become like us, knowing both good and evil. What if they reach out, take fruit from the tree of life, and eat it? Then they will live forever!” 23  So the LORD God banished them from the Garden of Eden, and he sent Adam out to cultivate the ground from which he had been made. 24  After sending them out, the LORD God stationed mighty cherubim to the east of the Garden of Eden. And he placed a flaming sword that flashed back and forth to guard the way to the tree of life.

Something to take home:

GOD’s protection comes in so many different ways.  What we consider as a curse, may actually be a blessing in disguise!

GOD’s heart truly is a heart of love, and His patience toward us is truly divine.  Thanks be to the GOD of mercy who, yet, while we were still sinners, died for us.[1]

GOD’s protection and patience toward Adam and Eve speak volumes about His true nature and character.  His willingness to protect even in the midst of punishment reveals His desire to fix what we’ve broken.  Though Adam and Eve brought destruction, Christ brought redemption.  That’s why the Apostle Paul can say in his letter to the Church at Corinth:

2 Corinthians 4:16-18 (NLT), 16  That is why we never give up.  Though our bodies are dying, our spirits are being renewed every day.  17  For our present troubles are small and won’t last very long.  Yet they produce for us a glory that vastly outweighs them and will last forever!  18  So we don’t look at the troubles we can see now; rather, we fix our gaze on things that cannot be seen.  For the things we see now will soon be gone, but the things we cannot see will last forever.

Key Point:  “GOD’s protection shows His patience toward us even when we’re in the wrong.”
